Provincial government delivers 2010 Throne Speech

The 2nd Session of the 39th Parliament of the Legislature opened today with Lieutenant Governor Steven L. Point giving the Speech from the Throne.

Education highlights:

  • A focus on the individual and unique needs of each child.
  • Developing new forms of schooling to provide greater choice and diversity, centred on students’ special interests and talents.
  • Smarter approaches will allow more resources to be focused on students’ learning needs while less is spent on administrative costs.
  • An emphasis on early learning, including Strong Start Centres and voluntary, full-time Kindergarten for five-year-olds beginning this September. Full-day Kindergarten will be fully funded and in every school by September 2011.
  • Neighbourhood Learning Centres will integrate neighborhood needs with available capital resources and under-utilized spaces.
  • New emphasis will be placed on parental involvement and on tailoring our education system to each child’s individual needs, interests and passions.
  • A new Master Teacher program will be developed.
  • Private-sector partnerships to establish neighbourhood preschools for four-year-olds and three-year-olds within communities over the next five years.

BCSTA looks forward to working with government to continue to bring about important changes for students in British Columbia. President Connie Denesiuk and Executive Director Stephen Hansen will be attending the budget lock-up on March 2, 2010, and will continue to bring forward trustee concerns regarding education funding.
