Significant Advocacy Win - Boards of Education to get HST Rebate
In a media release this afternoon the Provincial Government announced that boards of education, along with universities and hospitals, will receive rebates to ensure that on average they will not pay any more provincial tax due to the implementation of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). When the HST is implemented in July boards of education will be provided with an 87 per cent rebate of the provincial portion of the harmonized tax.
In a December 2009 letter to Finance Minister Colin Hansen, BCSTA called for a rebate of no less than the 68 per cent originally calculated by the BC Association of School Business Officials (BCASBO) to mitigate the estimated $32 million impact to boards.
“This is very welcome news” said BCSTA President Connie Denesiuk. “This will remove one of the many funding pressures that boards are dealing with as they start to prepare their budgets for the next school year”.
