Holdback funds update

The November 26 edition of Advocacy News highlighted government debate on Ministry of Education budget estimates. The 37 pages of transcript included several topics of concern that BCSTA and boards of education have been advocating on since the government's September 1 budget update.

The good news that emerged from the discussions was that the $3.7 million holdback funds distributed to boards in June are not going to be deducted from the 2009/10 allocations, as was initially announced.

BCSTA President Connie Denesiuk said that she is very proud of the advocacy efforts of trustees and BCSTA over the past few months. "Boards have worked extremely hard in response to the loss of the AFG and the other significant financial challenges this year. We now need to turn our focus to making things better for the future. This week's meeting with board chairs, superintendents, secretary treasurers and Ministry staff will be an important opportunity to discuss how we can jointly move forward."
