School Lands Disposal Motions at UBCM AGM
Three motions related to the disposal of school land have been submitted by local governments to the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Annual General Meeting (Sept. 30 – Oct. 2). These motions, if passed by that assembly, would direct UBCM to advocate for changes in legislation to require boards of education to:
BCSTA President Connie Denesiuk and UBCM President Robert Hobson have met on this matter and have subsequently arranged for another meeting to be held along with the Minister of Education, and the Minister of Community and Rural Development.
In addition to this provincial level advocacy, BCSTA is asking boards of education to contact their respective local governments to encourage them not to support these motions. Boards of education are very aware of the importance of school buildings and lands in their communities. There are many examples throughout the province of boards of education and local communities working collaboratively to make the best use of school properties, surplus or otherwise. It is critical that boards of education maintain control over the use and disposal of school properties so as to best meet the current and future needs of students.
Given the short timeline we encourage boards to contact their local governments at the earliest possible opportunity.
BCSTA General Council Judith Clark is preparing a useful, extensive background document that will be distributed later on today.
