AGM Report of Proceedings now available
Our AGM 2008 Report of Proceedings is now available. This 75-page publication reports on BCSTA’s 104th Annual General Meeting and Conference, held at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, April 3-6, 2008. Coverage includes the President’s Report, this year’s trustee long-service recognition, the disposition of motions, and the final resolutions.
This year, the Report of Proceedings is being published in an electronic version only. Paper copies can be produced, if requested: contact Communications Assistant Silvia Moreno-Garcia for one.

May 30 – application deadline for School Management and Leadership Program
The deadline for applying to the University of Victoria’s Certificate in School Management and Leadership (CSML) Program is May 30, 2008. The certificate program is a graduate-level designation for educators who wish to specialize in the management and leadership of BC schools. CSML is offered through the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies in UVic’s Faculty of Education. The May cohort will be the fourth since the program began in 2004.
CSML is supported by the BC Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association, the BC School Superintendents Association, the BC Education Leadership Council and BCSTA.

Early Childhood Bilingualism: Perils and Possibilities
On Monday, April 28th, Dr. Fred Genesee of McGill University will be giving a free, public lecture at 7:30 pm in the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library. The title of his lecture is “Early childhood bilingualism: Perils and possibilities.” This presentation will appeal to those interested in issues pertaining to bilingualism in education, second-language learners, immersion, and the challenges associated with accommodating the varied needs of learners from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Dr. Genesee is a world-renowned scholar of bilingualism, language development and language immersion programs, a Professor of Psychology at McGill University, and the author of numerous scientific research books and reports on language learning in children.
The Minerva Lecture Series was created by the Canadian Council on Learning to foster discussion between Canadian learning researchers and citizens from across the country.

300 BC Schools and Arts Councils host Arts and Culture Week -April 20-26
During Arts and Culture Week, April 20-26, over 300 schools and arts councils across BC will be hosting arts activities, gallery walks, exhibitions and live performances.
Now in its ninth year, this celebratory week focuses on the important contribution that arts and culture make in educational and community life.
