Catch the literacy current at Maple Creek

filmingAs part of their new mandate, BC’s boards of education are rewriting the book on literacy with exciting, innovative ways to share the love of reading with children. A stellar example was the recent Literacy Conference at Coquitlam’s Maple Creek Middle School.

Maple Creek’s teacher-librarian, Jacqueline Moniot, organized the annual conference, which featured choir performances, Aboriginal storytellers, acting, sudoku, a math magician, and talks with the students by authors, including BCSTA’s own writer/editor, Melanie Jackson. Watch for a future Education Leader story on this special day.

Pictured:  Sara Sawatzky from Tarlington Training, in her one-hour workshop on the basics of acting for film and television that gave participants the opportunity to read and perform a scene on camera.

For more information, contact Jacqueline, who proudly declares herself a staunch advocate of reading – and of the power of libraries in children’s lives.
