The school as heart of the community

A school is a living, breathing fount of activity. Children stream through its doors and down its hallways; they clamber across its fields and over its playground equipment.

These days, the excitement and bustle of school life is extending beyond students to the community as a whole. The school is becoming the heart of the community.

Through the School Community Connections program, grants assist in transforming school facilities into vital, lively hubs for community activities and services. Administered on behalf of the Ministry of Education through a collaborative partnership between the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) and the British Columbia School Trustees’ Association (BCSTA), SCC has as its goals:

 •   to encourage and facilitate the co-location of services for students,
their families and the larger community within school facilities
 •   to make greater utilization of available or new school facilities, and
 •   to encourage collaborative, long-term facilities planning that takes
into account the needs of the community as a whole.

Achievements to date

Local governments, school boards, and community partners are successfully collaborating through SCC. They're creating the opportunity for school facilities to better serve the needs of a changing society, while supporting and strengthening communities across BC. There are already many projects in progress.

Grant status

The third intake of the Strengthening the Connection grants have now closed. Funds for awarded grants have been set aside and will be honoured.  BCSTA, UBCM and the Ministry of Education will review the program in 2010 to determine whether there is sufficient remaining funds to offer a future round of applications.
