Six reasons to incorporate community engagement into your decision-making

1. The public expects it—More and more people are demanding to be involved. Meeting this expectation builds trust and credibility and enhances board relationships.

2. Decision-making will improve—Public involvement is often credited for improving decisions, as participants often bring new ideas and information to the process.

3. Public confidence will increase—When the decision-making process is open and the public is involved, decisions are well understood and more likely to be supported.

4. Public support will increase—When people are involved in decision-making, they tend to take responsibility for a program outcome and contribute actively towards its success.

5. Conflict is reduced—Conflict may be reduced as common values and goals are identified and understanding is built among participants.

6. It’s good for the reputation—Actively involving the public in decision-making will enhance the board’s reputation and improve relationships with the community. It may also create a pool of endorsers who can be called upon to speak to the media or at public meetings.
