Trustee remuneration

The School Act authorizes boards to establish and pay stipends to trustees. Annual authorization of the stipends is essential; otherwise the board does not have legal authority to pay trustees. The Income Tax Act permits up to one-third of a trustee’s stipend to be paid as a tax-free allowance to cover the incidental expenses of holding office.

BCSTA annually updates information regarding trustee honouraria in every district and distributes the information back to boards. There are several approaches taken by boards of education in BC. Some boards have a trustee remuneration committee that reports annually to the board. Some tie increases to the consumer price index; others do a scan of what other public organizations are paying elected members. Consult with BCSTA and trustees in other districts to determine what approach would work best in your community.
