Revised (Dec 18 2009)

Effective policy:

  • is precise
  • reflects the overall values of the board and community
  • is consistent with the board’s vision
  • is flexible and responds effectively to operational issues as they arise
  • clearly defines expectations, roles and responsibilities
  • envisages and articulates clear outcomes, and
  • is written in plain language and easily understood.

Most policies include regulations or administrative procedures explaining how they will be implemented in the district. These regulations should be reviewed carefully to ensure that they accurately reflect the board’s intentions as stated in the main policy statement. Trustees should review all policies for currency and accuracy at least once in their three-year term.
