District review

Questions to consider:

  • When is the next district review expected?
  • How is the district addressing the recommendations in the last district review?
  • How is our response to the district review recommendations reflected in our district achievement contract?

The purpose of ministry-led district reviews is to provide feedback and recommendations to the district, the Ministry
of Education and the public regarding the district’s work in improving student achievement.

Until recently district reviews were conducted in about 20 districts every year and in each school district approximately every three years. The district review teams were led by a superintendent from another district and include representation from district and school leaders, teachers, parents and ministry staff. Aboriginal perspectives and special education expertise were also considered as teams are constructed. This practice is currently being reconsidered.

The team:

  • reviews district and school achievement data
  • reviews the district achievement contracts and school plans to improve student achievement
  • makes recommendations to the board and to the minister about improving student achievement, and
  • identifies promising practices that could assist other districts and schools in their efforts to improve student achievement.

District review reports are available on the ministry website.
