Crisis management

Questions to consider:

  • What is the district policy for handling crisis situations?
  • Who is the designated official spokesperson?
  • How will other trustees be kept apprised of issues as they develop?

It is to be expected that boards will have to deal with crises such as a violent incident, accident or difficult personnel matter during their term. Most districts have well-defined policies related to how these incidents are to be handled and highly skilled staff to carry out the multitude of tasks that are required.

You may receive direct calls from the media or concerned parents. Be careful. Off-the-cuff statements that you make can undermine the work of the board without you knowing it. Learn what the policy and procedures are in your district.
