Revised (Nov 20 2008)
Timing of the annual operating budget
Feb. 15—Boards must provide the minister with an estimate of student enrollment for the next school year. The estimate can be accepted or altered by the ministry.
March 15—The minister must estimate the amount of operating grant going to each board. The board must also provide an estimate of its debt service surplus or deficit for the current school year.
March 30—The minister must provide each board with an estimate of the board’s debt service expenses for the next school year.
April 27—In the unlikely event that increased taxes have been approved by referendum, the minister must be notified of the details.
June 30—The board must adopt its preliminary operating budget for the next fiscal year and submit a copy to the minister.
September 30—School district enrollments as of September 30 must be submitted. These figures are used in the final calculation of the provincial grants. Final operating grants are based on changes in enrollment and the amount granted per pupil.
Fall—Boards must amend their operating budgets within 60 days of receiving final figures from the ministry.
