Relationships with other levels of government

Boards are expected to speak on behalf of public education in their communities particularly when the decisions and actions of other organizations affect the work of the school district. For example, many important decisions in education are made at the provincial level, such as funding levels, graduation requirements, curricular content and collective agreements. At the municipal level, planning, zoning and budgetary decisions can have a major impact on the work of the school district.

It is imperative that boards keep their local communities, municipal council members, MLAs and ministry officials informed about local public education perspectives, priorities, values and impacts throughout the decision-making process.

For more information about how the different levels of government affect public education, see the Reference materials section, Legal and regulatory framework.
