Revised (Dec 15 2009)
Influences on the work of school trustees
|
Other influences include:
- decisions made by previous boards
- provincial government initiatives (e.g., carbon neutral policies, making BC the most literate jurisdiction by 2010, etc.)
- Minister of Education initiatives (e.g., boards’ expanded mandate, healthy schools, etc.)
|
Trustees are part of a network of interacting parts, all of which exert influence on the achievement of students in the district. Astute board members know that they must constantly look for leverage points, small actions that have big impact, in order to move their organizations toward board-approved results.
Decisions aren’t made in a vacuum. They are influenced by many factors. Policies must be consistent with the mission, vision and values of the district. Policies—including the mission, vision and values—must also be consistent with federal and provincial legislation, government regulations and board bylaws.
