Like no other governing body

Boards of education function differently from other elected groups. Boards co-govern with the Ministry of Education. This is explained in greater detail in Section 2, The Key Work, Roles and Responsibilities, The board of education.

The role of school trustee is different from other elected positions as well. You bring your own expertise, values and experiences but participate in a corporate board. You will see varying perspectives come out in planning and committee meetings. This is valuable for an effective board. However, once decisions are made and votes are taken, each trustee has a responsibility to respect and present the position of the board as a whole—even if you disagree with the decision.

For more information, see Section 2, The Key Work, Roles and responsibilities, School trustees, and Section 5, Reference materials, Legal and regulatory framework.
