"I got involved as a school trustee because I wanted to know more about education and community issues around schools (my daughter was starting Kindergarten) and because of a divisive school reconfiguration debate that had just taken place in the district. I was a totally green layperson. For new trustees, my advice is watch and listen carefully because you have to make decisions even if you feel ill-equipped. Doing your homework is critical. I remained involved because I enjoyed working as part of a team and it always seemed there were more challenges ahead. I wanted to make sure the board was set to go forward. It’s difficult to step back if you’re in really challenging times. The more involved you are, the more you care."
