Revised (Dec 4 2008)

"Being a school trustee isn’t easy. You’re going to need a pretty thick skin, but keep the kids in mind. I remain motivated by school concerts and students who excel in different areas and then go on to represent our district and the province. It’s wonderful to see the amazing people who dedicate their lives to student achievement in all areas. "

President of BCSTA, Okanagan Skaha

About this resource guide

Key Work Resources—The Guide to School Trusteeship in BC, is a publication of the British Columbia School Trustees Association (BCSTA). It is provided to all school trustees whose boards are members of the Association. Currently, all 60 boards of education are members.

The guide is intended to help school trustees accomplish their Key Work. In 1998, members of the BCSTA spent considerable time discussing what this meant. They summed up trustees’ Key Work in the statement: improving student achievement through community engagement. You will find many ideas here to help you accomplish this goal.

This is the fourth edition of the guide, which builds on the content of the 2000, 2002 and 2005 editions. The content has been updated and expanded to reflect the new mandate, new provincial regulations and school district procedures. The glossary can help you navigate through the sometimes bewildering terminology.

We encourage you to keep Key Work Resources close at hand as a ready source of information that will assist you in your role as a school trustee. If you don’t find the information you are looking for here, BCSTA staff are just a phone call, fax or e-mail away.

The Key Work concept, which BCSTA introduced in 1998, explains in straightforward terms what it is that school trustees are elected to do. They are elected to improve student achievement. They do it by engaging their communities in building and maintaining a school system that reflects local priorities, values and expectations. They listen to their communities, guide the work of their school district by setting a plan, policy and the annual budget, and report back to the public on the progress being made in improving student achievement.

BCSTA is your association, providing a variety of services such as advocacy, board development and education, and legal and legislative services.  We’re here to serve you. And, we welcome you to explore our entire website, where you’ll find a wealth of informational resources: e-Alerts, our weekly e-Digest, From the Legislature, the Education Leader, and now an online, updated version of Key Work Resources, the book you hold in your hands.
