Trustee Academy 2017 Concurrent Sessions

Trustee Academy 2017 is just around the corner, featuring a variety of concurrent session that are set to inspire trustees as they assemble under the theme of “Education Evolution: Student-Centred Governance” this November. The goal of this year’s academy is to highlight the important role students play in the governance of our public education system. Have a peek at what’s in store:

 

Social Media: Student Safety and Policy
Jesse Miller, Social Media Strategist and Expert

Jesse is renowned for proactively examining the challenges of social media, addressing the realities behind the known concerns around social media, and prompts dialogue that reflects the issues seen with new media and technology influences. His presentation will provide Trustees with the tools needed to better equip themselves for participation in the social media world and extends dialogues to reflect technology influences in our connected daily lives

The Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI): What We Are Learning About Student Social and Emotional Health and Well-being in BC Schools
Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, Director, H.E.L.P

We know that physical fitness is important for overall health and well-being. Groundbreaking scientific research is now illustrating that students’ social and emotional fitness is also critical to their overall health and well-being, playing a key role in all aspects of their lives, from self-regulation, to developing empathy and maintaining positive relationships. The science now indicates that these skills can be taught and are important for bolstering academic achievement and life success.

In this interactive session, Dr. Schonert-Reichl will explore the social and emotional development of grade 4 and 7 students through local school and community data gathered through the Middle Development Instrument (MDI). She will facilitate a strengths-based inquiry into students’ social and emotional health and well-being, and related trends, including the promotion of dimensions of student wellness – including self-regulation, empathy, and resiliency. Kim will also discuss the practical strategies for creating a caring classroom and school environment, promoting teachers’ well-being and social and emotional skills, and the integration of social and emotional learning (SEL) practices and strategies into curriculum and school cultures. The session will include a discussion of key aspects of social and emotional development and explore approaches in classrooms, schools and communities to improve well-being outcomes for children and youth.

Aboriginal Understandings
Laura Tait, Director of Instruction, Aboriginal Education, SD68 (Nanaimo Ladysmith)

Laura will share Aboriginal Understandings as they pertain to the education system. Along with Trustee Stephanie Higginson, she will also highlight the beginnings of their district’s journey to Reconciliation.

The Courage to Work Together: Governing to Create Communities of Learning

Pearl Deasey, Student Trustee, SD46 (Sunshine Coast)

How can your board engage the collective wisdom of students, staff and community to meet your goals? This interactive session will present innovative ideas and facilitate discussions for working together in your own context.

SOGI 123 resources for Trustees

Matt, along with a panel of Trustees, will explore the topic of SOGI, resources and current district initiatives.
